Use your own ink

This morning I reflected on something I read in The Boonly, a weekly idea newsletter I get on Sundays.

“Are my pursuits genuinely reflective of my own dreams and values? Have I been seduced by the success stories of others, mistaking them for roadmaps to fulfillment? You see what other people are doing, their lifestyles or success stories, and you start thinking you want the same.”

Here’s the crucial question: “Is this what I really want?” In other words, do my pursuits come from my own passions or from the influence of others?

My theological mind immediately recognized this as a manifestation of coveting. The commandments are clear that we are not to covet, or desire what other people have. This would include both things and relationships. But isn’t that exactly what we pursue?

Are your new year’s resolutions things you really want to do or be, or do they reveal your wishes to be like someone else or have as much fun as them? Too often, “Instead of carving our own path, we find ourselves measuring our worth against borrowed ideals, often feeling empty, dissatisfied, and disconnected from our own reality.”

The author, Irena Spegar, expresses a different approach: “Your journey is a narrative waiting to be written, not in the ink of borrowed dreams, but in the colors of your person aspirations.”

I love the words, but I’m challenged that she does not suggest a strategy for accomplishing this. How do I identify and set out on my own personal path? How can I make sure I am painting my life in my own colors?

I guess it’s up to me to suggest a few ways to do that. (I am learning here as I go, so be easy with me!)

  • Turn off everything. Phone, social media, doorbell (yes, we clipped the wires), don’t walk to the mailbox, close the bedroom door, and be alone. I need to spend a few moments listening to my thoughts, my feelings, and my appetite.
  • Look back at the things that inspired, energized, or motivated you in the past. That’s who you are and that’s who you really want to be. I play trumpet and guitar, I love to read and write, I’ve always enjoyed running and fitness. I should try to be even better at those things.

That’s all I’ve got for now. My resolution is to use my own ink and write my own story. How about you?

I was busy

I went through my Google calendar to remember all that happened in 2024. I was pretty busy.

We made three trips to Rowlett, Texas (a western suburb of Dallas) last year. We returned from a post-Christmas trip on January 1. We spent holy week and Easter with them March 26 through April 2. And then we made a fall trip November 6-11. Each trip included a stay in a nice Airbnb condo.

We spent a lot of time at grandsons’ soccer and baseball games. The younger grandson played soccer in the spring and machine-pitch baseball in the fall. He did really well and scored a lot of goals in the spring, and hit well in the fall. Unfortunately, we sat and watched a lot of games in cold, windy drizzle in the fall. Yuk.

The older grandson (age 9) had a really good spring machine-pitch baseball season, and played on a kid-pitch travel team in the fall. He learned a lot and really improved with good coaching and lots of practice with his dad.

On January 2 we picked up our Great Dane puppy, Willow, from a breeder in Ocala, Florida. She was about ten pounds at the time. By the end of the year, she was 110. Yeah, that’s a big puppy! I thought, “Well, when she’s a year old, we’ll switch her to adult dog food.” Nope. They grow up until 18 to 24 months. And you know what? She looks a little skinny. I just upped her daily food to 4-1/2 cups of large breed puppy food twice a day. Yeah, she’s got some growing to do.

I stepped out of retirement to pastorally officiate at three memorial services last year. They were all folks I had known for many years. Sweet memories on sad days.

The big trip this past year was to Hawaii in July. A gracious friend who owns a house on the big island let us stay for nine nights. We explored green and black sand beaches, coffee, macadamia, and chocolate farms. A luau and an amazing helicopter ride over the active volcanoes made my 67th birthday extra-special. We enjoyed running around in a rental Jeep, too! Best birthday ever!

Along the way, I wrote 367 blog posts, taught middle school Sunday School, started as an online Bible Study Fellowship leader, sold a whole bunch of stuff we didn’t need on eBay, did a lot of walking with the dogs, worked out in the garage, and read thirty-one books.

What’s new?

It’s a new year. The writer of Ecclesiastes says there is “nothing new under the sun” (Ecc. 1:9). But I found all these new things mentioned in scripture:

  • A new song: “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God” (Ps. 40:3)

Happy New Year!

img_0041I barely made it to midnight to celebrate the first minutes of 2009.  I’m just not a night person, but come daylight, I’m up and running.

I am already looking forward to this new year.  Lisa and I will celebrate our 25th anniversary with a cruise to Alaska in the summer.  Olivia and I will travel to London at the end of the year with the high school band to march in their new year’s parade.  Olivia will also be confirmed in June.  Adam will graduate from Florida State and will move to St. Louis sometime this summer to begin his seminary studies.  We’ll get another car paid off.  Have to like that.

In between all those events, just about anything happen.  That was the big lesson from 2008.  You just never know.  Just hang on and try to enjoy the ride.
