A “through the bible” devotion from Leviticus 23.

As you might imagine, God was on my mind a lot in full-time ministry. If I wasn’t at church teaching or preaching or preparing to preach or teach, I was visiting a member of the congregation in the hospital or their home. Many of my daily tasks orbited around the Lord. My daily habits of scripture reading, prayer, devotional writing, and listening to Christian music followed me into retirement.

It was and still is hard to remember that even in church circles, not everyone’s life is infused with spirituality. Thoughts of God are a weekly occurrence, typically on a Sunday morning. Faith is there, but so is work, household chores, schoolwork, family commitments, hobbies, sports, self care, friends, sleep, and screen time. God is just one of the many priorities that vie for our attention, energy, and affection.

So God puts himself on the calendar. Pretty clever. The cycles of planting and harvesting were punctuated with feasts and celebrations that acknowledged God as provider and gave him thanks (Leviticus 23). He made himself a scheduled part of their work and rest each day, week, season, and year. It was virtually impossible to forget that he gives us life and breath and all things.

I guess we could do that. Put God on your daily schedule. In fact, put him on first, so that nothing else interferes with your time with him.

It’s on your calendar

A “through the bible” devotion from Exodus 13.

I have my AC company come out and tune up my system twice a year. I called them up to schedule the service and wrote it on my calendar. As soon as I ended the call, I got a text message confirming the appointment. I also got an email.

The day before they were scheduled to arrive, I got another text message, an email, and a voicemail, reminding me of the service call.

The morning of the schedule service, I got a text and a voicemail reminding me they were coming. I then got a text when the tech was on his way and then another when he was in my neighborhood.

The final text message informed me that he had arrived at my house.

Clearly, someone wants me to remember this very important appointment!

I get similar attention from my dentist, doctors, and the veterinarian. It must be a sign of the times. Patients and clients don’t remember, don’t put it on their calendar, and don’t show up for an appointment.

This is not a new phenomenon. A long time ago, so that the people wouldn’t forget what God did for them, he instructed them to put it on their calendar. “Remember this day in which you departed from Egypt…you shall keep this ordinance at its appointed time from year to year” (Exodus 13:3,10).

Now maybe you’re thinking, “How could God’s people ever forget how he got them out of Egypt with displays of his power?” And yet, you’re doubts, fears, guilt, and shame make you forget the salvation won for you by Christ on the cross.

So God puts it on your calendar. A birthday to remind you of your creator. A Sunday to remind you of your Savior (He is not here; he is risen!) A doctor’s appointment to remind you of God’s healing power. Lunch with a friend to remind us we weren’t created to be alone. A funeral to remind you there’s so much life yet to come.

Any and all of these can get lost in the busyness and distractions of life. So God sneaks all these days into your calendar!

Just a few 2018 highlights

Looking through last year’s calendar, here are some of the highlights of 2018.

I traveled to:

  • The Collector Inn with Lisa in St. Augustine, FL in January.
  • Dallas with Lisa to visit my son and his family in March and again in July.
  • Richmond, VA with Lisa while she attended a conference, and also to see Tim and Julie, Brian and Kate, and my Dad.
  • Detroit, MI for the English District convention in June.
  • Springfield, VA to see my dad while my brother was on vacation.
  • Regional pastor’s conference in Ocean City, NJ in October.

As best as I can put together, I prepared and preached 60 sermons, performed three weddings, did six baptisms, and conducted eight funerals.

Grandson Daniel was born September 14 (fourth grandchild). Granddaughter Cameron was born December 20 (fifth grandchild).

My son Adam and his family came to visit Christmas (2017) and New Years (2018). My daughter Kate and her husband Brian came to visit over Memorial Day weekend. They moved in with us for a few months in July and August till their new house in St. John’s county closed.

I started CrossFit with Lisa in October. We remodeled our house in June and July: new floors, kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets. We celebrated our thirty-fourth wedding anniversary, too!
