A message through creation

Today’s First 15 devotion was about how God speaks through his creation. We know he speaks to us in the bible. But the bible says he speaks to us through his creation.

“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made” (Romans 1:20).

In Psalm 147:8-9, and 15-18, scripture tells us that he sends his word to feed the animals and affect the weather.

Jesus said the birds who are fed by the heavenly Father and the flowers he beautifully clothes proclaim a powerful message: stop worrying (Matthew 6:26-30).

Today I journaled, “While there is much about God I can’t learn from creation, I can ask him, ‘What are you teaching me through creation today?'” In that sense, God has much to say through the air I breathe, the water I drink, the food I eat, the sunrise colors I see in the sky each day, and the trees that line my morning walk.

What I learned today:

  • He provides for me. I am alive because he gives me life, breath, and everything (Acts 17:25).
  • He is a creative creator. He came up with so many forms of plant and animal life that not only fit together but benefit each other.
  • He knows what will pique my interest and what will take my breath away. From colors to clouds to creatures (like singing birds), I love to walk down the streets of my neighborhood. There is always something new to notice, appreciate, and give thanks for.

There are many more messages in the starry night sky, the roaring ocean waves, gusty winds bending the trees, and pouring rain soaking you as you dash inside the house.

What are those things saying?

No excuses

Some “through the bible” thoughts from Romans 1 and 2.

With more means of communication than ever, we’ve also got more excuses.

  • “I didn’t see your email.”
  • “I didn’t get your message.”
  • “My phone was dead.”
  • “I didn’t hear what you said.”
  • “The email went to my spam folder.”
  • “I never got the letter. It must have gotten lost in the mail.”

In Romans 1, Paul states there’s no excuse for not knowing God. Creation makes it obvious (1:20).

In Romans 2, Paul adds there’s no excuse for your behavior, either. You can’t say you didn’t know. Either your conscience (2:15) or the law (2:17) convicts you.

On the one hand, I’m dismayed that all my excuses have been disqualified.

On the other hand, with no excuses to fall back on, I have can only depend on grace. Which is where my hope should be anyway.

Legrand Malany

Legrand Malany died last Friday, and I did his memorial service today for a packed house at Lohman Palm Coast Funeral Home (read 70+ people).  Quite a tribute to the man.  I had only met him a few times, but knew his wife of 70 years, Marian, very well.  What a privilege to meet his four children, along with lots of other relatives and friends.  The best part is just knowing someone named Legrand.  Awesome name.

I’ve noticed that writing funeral messages comes easier than I remember in the past.  With some biographical information and scripture, they just flow.  Practice and experience help, of course.  Most important:  keep it simple.

All of Legrand’s children spoke.  A tough assignment, but they did a great job.  Just enough to share their hearts and lift our spirits.

I haven’t minded doing funerals and memorials lately.  I like to be the one who mentions Jesus.
